Again, if you prefer video format, here’s today’s newsletter in a video format:
YouTube Updates:
Polls are now available on Shorts to boost engagement
YouTube is experimenting with a homepage where video age and views aren’t shown. This is only a test with a select group—so no need to panic just yet!
YouTube is introducing "data stories" to visually showcase a video’s first 24-hour metrics. Creators with 4,000+ subscribers can now link to brand partnerships, and a "most relevant" comment filter helps creators keep track of key viewer questions and feedback.
Meta Updates:
Mark Zuckerberg hinted that Instagram and Facebook might soon feature a dedicated AI feed to highlight AI-generated/edited content and AI-curated summaries.
If you REALLY hate Google search, I have some good news-bad news as Meta has begun developing its own AI-powered search engine to reduce reliance on Google and Microsoft.
Meta is launching 'Flexible Media' ads, which allow it to deliver media dynamically across various placements for optimized ad performance, adapting to where it performs best for each user.
Threads has surged to 275 million monthly active users, gaining 75 million users in just three months. With a daily sign-up rate of over 1 million, Threads is on track to potentially challenge X’s user base by mid-next year.
Instagram Updates:
Adam Mosseri, CEO of Instagram, explained why carousels sometimes start on the second slide (it’s because you’ve already seen the first and might not remember!). He also confirmed that larger creators (or more popular videos in this case) receive higher video quality—a perk also seen on Twitch and YouTube.
Instagram is rolling out tools to help creators better manage DMs, allowing filtering by follower count, verified accounts, brands, and more. A new “Story Replies” folder also makes it easy to keep track of story interactions in one place.
Instagram has officially surpassed Facebook in EU monthly active users, with 269.1 million users compared to Facebook’s 260.6 million. This shift marks a significant milestone in Meta’s social media landscape.
LinkedIn Updates:
LinkedIn released an article explaining its algorithm in greater depth.
In less positive news, LinkedIn received a $335 million fine from the EU for GDPR violations in ad tracking.
LinkedIn recommends videos between 15 seconds and 2 minutes for best engagement. Adding a relevant description and encouraging sharing or comments are also key for maximizing reach.
ChatGPT’s New Search Feature:
ChatGPT has rolled out search functionality to all waitlisted users, allowing it to search the web in real time—similar to Google Gemini and Perplexity AI.
Who Spends the Most Time on Social Media?
A Visual Capitalist report reveals that the average internet user spends daily 2.5 hours on social media, with TikTok users spending the most time per user. Interestingly, women spend about 16 minutes more daily on social platforms than men.
Hootsuite’s best times to post in Q3 2024
Hootsuite published a blog with alleged best times to post on each social network in Q3 2024 and it’s THESE TIMES:
• Facebook: 7 AM on Saturdays
• Instagram: 5-7 AM on Wednesdays
• X: 10 AM - 1 PM on Mondays + Tuesdays
• Linkedin: 7-8 PM on workdays
• TikTok: 3 PM on Thursdays
• Threads: 8:00 AM on Tuesdays
• Pinterest: 12:00 PM on Fridays
That’s it!
If you got this far, let me know in the comments how much time on social media do you spend. Chances are it's less than my 5 hours 👀.
Thanks!
Mark.
